Lumps And Bumps Removal

Lumps and bumps, like sebaceous cysts, dermatofibromas, lipomas and neurofibromas can appear on the skin or beneath it due to various skin conditions.

Sebacesous Cysts

These cysts are enclosed pouches of tissue that are usually filled with sebum. They are benign (non-cancerous) and have a pea-like appearance under the skin. Cortisone medication injections can be given if the cysts are inflamed; which can make them shrink. If the injections or other medication do not prove effective or if the cysts reoccur they can be surgically removed in cases where they exhibit problematic symptoms.

Cherry Angioma

Cherry angioma are cherry-red coloured bumps on the surface of the skin. They are smooth and commonly appear on the trunk of the body however, they can appear in other parts too. They generally occur in people above 40 years of age. The exact reason for cherry angiomas is not known. They can be eliminated by using lasers or electrocautery – it is a method in which a tiny probe which has an electric current running through itis used to destroythe tissue. However using this method to remove cherry angioma may leave scars.

Dermatofibromas

Dermatofibromas are benign round growths on the skin. They are usually red-brownish coloured growths and generally occur on the arms and legs. Because of their harmless nature it is not necessary to treat them other than for cosmetic purposes. However they can be removed surgically or liquid nitrogen can be used to even out the bump.

Keratoacanthoma

Keratoacanthoma appears when cells inside the hair follicle have abnormal growth. Itis usually set off by a small wound in a part which has experienced damage by exposure to the sun. The greatest hazard for Keratoacanthoma is the sun’s UV rays.

Keratoacanthoma mostly appears on skin that has been damaged by the sun in the form of a pudgy growth with a crusted plug in the middle.

Methods of removing Keratoacanthoma:

  • Cryotherapy
  • Curettage (scraping off and burning the growth)
  • Removing it surgically
  • Injecting a cancer medication into the lesion

Lipomas

Lipomas are subcutaneous soft tissue tumours which are generally benign. They have a soft, rubbery texture and are likely to occur on the trunk, shoulders and neck. However lipomas can appear in other parts of the body too.

They do not penetrate in the tissues around the affected area, hence they can be eliminated by excision.

Another option to remove it is to make an incision and squeeze the lipomas through it.This method is effective in parts which have very thin skin.Large-sized lipomas can be removed by liposuction-assisted lipectomy. This method leaves little or no scars.

Neurofibromas

Neurofibromas are soft, plump growths that appear on and beneath the skin. Occasionally they also appear deep inside the body. They are benign in nature, but they can sometimes change into malignant or cancerous tumours.

If you do not see any symptoms, treatment may not be required. If the neurofibromas are affecting an important nerve, doctors may opt to remove it surgically. In majority cases, the treatment is successful and they do not reappear.
