10 Things to Know Before Getting Dermal Fillers

Body Care, Non-Surgical

It’s no secret that many of us take the firm, smooth, healthy skin of our youth for granted – until it’s gone.

Tight, plump skin is the result of strong underlying tissues, and over time, these will gradually weaken (like everything else!). The result? Aged, tired, saggy skin.

Previously, people would fill in these undesirable lines and wrinkles with surgery, but modern treatments like dermal fillers are an increasingly popular and effective non-surgical treatment. They are designed to restore volume, contour the face and result in a natural healthy skin appearance.

1. What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are the injection of a gel-like substance underneath the skin. Imitating sugar molecules that occur naturally in the body, the bio-compatible substance is easily absorbed and boosts the skin, revitalising the target area and restoring the natural support structures that deteriorate with age.

Also known as wrinkle fillers, dermal fillers can do so much more, including smoothing out smile lines and around the nose, raising sunken cheeks, plumping the lips or minimising vertical lip lines. They can also be used to smooth out chin creases and improve overall facial symmetry.

2. Why do people get dermal fillers?

Non-invasive, reversible, and relatively affordable, it’s easy to see the appeal of dermal fillers to fight the signs of ageing, allowing people to take a proactive approach and minimise the early signs of ageing. For this reason, dermal fillers are most commonly chosen by people between the ages of 30 and 60.

Dermal fillers are also effective for adding definition to the lips and cheekbones or correcting misalignment from injuries.

3. Are dermal fillers safe?

By using a substance that closely resembles that which is found in the body organically, the risk of allergic reaction from dermal fillers is small. Dermal filler treatment is largely considered safe, having been performed successfully for over two decades, but as with any injectable cosmetic procedure, there are minor risks associated. These will all be explained in detail during your consultation.

4. How do I know which dermal filler is right for me?

Chelsea Cosmetics offers a wide range of leading dermal fillers, varying by longevity and application. Depending on the area to be treated and the desired outcome, we will ensure you are provided with the best and most recommended options before proceeding with the treatment. This will be determined by factors such as the duration of results, your skin type and age, the volume of filler required, and your budget.

5. What research should I do before getting fillers?

Before you get dermal fillers, it is worthwhile looking at before and after pictures to gain an idea of the results possible – particularly in the area(s) where you desire treatment. It is also worth gaining an understanding of what to expect during the procedure and how long the results generally take.

Some dermal fillers can be reversed, while others cannot. This will also be discussed at length during your initial consultation. If you have any questions or concerns, or you are unsure about anything, make sure you raise these with your doctor. We’re here to help.

6. What are the possible side effects of fillers?

Right after the session, it’s common to experience slight redness and swelling. Small lumps may appear and light bruising sometimes occurs, but typically, these symptoms will subside after a week or two.

It is worth mentioning that the post-procedural swelling may exaggerate the appearance of the filler, so it is worth waiting until this goes down to see the exact result.

In rare cases, a bacterial or viral infection may appear, but we do everything in our capacity to clean the area and reduce this risk. If you are especially prone to cold sores, it is worth mentioning during the consultation session.

7. What is the recovery for fillers after the procedure?

Recovery time will depend on the area treated and the filler used, but generally, a full recovery can be expected within two to four weeks, with swelling usually subsiding within 24 to 48 hours.

During this initial two day period, is it recommended to avoid any particularly intense physical activity. The Chelsea Cosmetics team will provide you with an optimal recovery plan.

8. How much do dermal fillers cost?

1mL of dermal filler begins at $800 and varies depending on the brand of filler used. More information can be found on our prices page.

At Chelsea Cosmetics, we do not use collagen dermal fillers due to the safety risks involved and use permanent filler in the lips only.

9. How long will results last?

Results for dermal fillers differ per patient, influenced by factors such as skin type, lifestyle, age, and of course, the area treated. The amount of filler used can also affect the outcome.

Broadly, we recommend follow up sessions every six to 12 months after initial treatment, and the treatment itself often lasts between 12 and 18 months.

If you’re looking to minimise the appearance of finer lines, finer fillers are opted for instead of dermal fillers. Laser skin resurfacing provides a more permanent option (however, has a correspondingly greater recovery time).
